PO‘IPU — A 53-year-old visitor from New Mexico was arrested yesterday for third-degree negligent homicide after he struck an elderly man in a crosswalk Thursday. The victim, 81-year-old Juan Lorenzo Sr. of Kalaheo, died Saturday from his injuries.
George Hostetter, the driver, was released on bail and is scheduled for a court appearance March 5.
Hostetter hit Lorenzo as he was crossing Kaumuali‘i Highway at the crosswalk near Holy Cross Church.
Lorenzo was taken to Kaua‘i Veteran’s Memorial Hospital. He was later airlifted to The Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu, where he died over the weekend.
Lorenzo is the first traffic fatality on Kaua‘i this year.
