WAIMEA — The girls basketball teams kept last night’s game in Waimea close by putting up solid defense. In the end, despite a huge turnaround in momentum going Kapa‘a High School’s way, Waimea High School won its fourth straight win 34-29.
It was a close game from start to finish, with the first quarter ending 10-6.
Then in the second, Kapa‘a’s Destiny Smith came up with three rebounds in a row, tossing the last one upcourt. The last 25 seconds saw a surge in the Warriors. Mailika Napoleon hit a 3-pointer to bring the Warriors within six of the Menehune. Hanalei Gomes found herself on the foul line shooting for two. Gomes sunk both.
With seconds counting down, Gomes came up with a huge steal — her first of two — which turned into another pair of scores, ending the second 21-18.
Kapa‘a’s Jondi Das had a chance to tie the game, in the third when the Warriors were down 2, when she came up with a steal of her own and drove to the basket. Das drew the foul and was sent to the line, missing both. Das was sent to the foul line for again, with 10 seconds left, this time sinking both.
Kapa‘a got as close as 1, but Waimea was able to stay on top and maintain its undefeated status.
Waimea was led by Aiko Grande who finished with 13 points, two rebounds and a steal. Cheri Kua had seven rebounds while Kierra Barba had six. For the Warriors, Napoleon finished with 9 points and nine rebounds.
In the junior varsity game, Kapa‘a beat Waimea 51-28. Jessilyn Artaho-Aki led the Warriors with 25 points. Teammate Justine Holt finished with 13.
