KALAHEO n An 81-year-old Kalaheo man remains in serious condition after being struck by a visitor while trying to cross the road.
After initially being taken to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital, the victim was flown for further care to Queens Medical Hospital on O‘ahu.
Police say the man was in a marked crosswalk around 7:05 a.m. fronting Holy Cross Church when he was hit by a westbound vehicle driven by a 53-year-old male visitor from New Mexico.
Police closed Kaumuali‘i Highway until roughly 7:30 a.m.
Units from the Kalaheo station and an ambulance were called to the scene and emergency vehicles were parked on or along the roadway to protect medical and fire personnel, along with the investigating officers, from being struck by passers-by, police said.
Kaua‘i Police Department Capt. Ale Quibilan said this type of accident is avoidable if drivers pay attention to the roadway, signs, road marking and the operation of their vehicles.
“Speed limits should be followed at all times, especially in residential and business districts such as Kalaheo and especially during peak traffic hours,” Quibilan said in an e-mail.
