HANAPEPE — Skye Shimabukuro, playing defense for most of the first half against Waimea, reverted back to her forward position in the second half, and with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, netted two goals to lead the Raider ladies to a 4-0 win over the Menehune.
Kaua‘i coach Mark Brandeburg indicated that since this was the Red Raiders final game of the year, he, too, would be letting his seniors play.
Waimea coach Ken Morikawa was hoping that his Menehune could chalk up a “W” before heading over to the Kapa‘a New Town Park, Saturday.
That was not to be as both teams waged a defensive slugfest that resulted in a 0-0 stalemate at the final whistle.
Earlier, Jaezelle Balilea opened up the scoring early in the first half to open up the scorebooks for the girls.
A defensive slugfest ensued as the Red Raider ladies worked on trying to improve on passing and splitting the field while players were put into positions they normally did not play during the season.
One of those playing out of the zone was Tiffany Ikeda-Simao, normally a defender, or a striker, depending on the needs of the Raiders.
For most of the first half, Ikeda-Simao played midfield, and with less than 15 minutes remaining in the half, took a pass from Ashlyn Ubongen and closed the door with a goal.
Waimea will close the Kaua‘i Interscholasti Federation soccer season by traveling to Kapa‘a Saturday for the final season game.
The JV contest starts at 10 a.m. and the varsity contest kicks off no earlier than 1 p.m.
