Waimea 53, Kaua‘i 29 WAIMEA — Waimea High School head basketball coach Elton Montemayor knows how to spread out his offense. Everyone got playing time and nearly all of them scored in the Menehune’s 53-29 first regular season win over Kaua‘i High School last night in Waimea.
Brandee Victorino led the team with 9 points and was 5-for-6 on the free-throw line. Jayme Jacinto and Aiko Grande both had 8 points apiece. Kayla Werner and Lorrine Agoc-Agrade had 7.
Kelsey Cadiente led the Raiders (0-2) with 8 points. Kathleen Cadiente had 5. All of Janessa Grady’s 4 points came from the free throw line.
Kaua‘i had a rough start with the Raiders held scoreless for the first few minutes of the game. It wasn’t until Grady was sent to the line and banked three shots. But Waimea charged the half, building a 20-point lead by halftime.
By the third quarter, the lead had gone up to more than 30 points. In the final quarter, Kaua‘i was only held to one basket until the final three minutes of the game. Four girls were sent to the line and three of them scored.
In the earlier junior varsity game, Sanida Pahulehua led the Menehune with 11 points in their 46-24 win over Kaua‘i. Kayla Perez led the Raiders with 9 points.
Waimea (0-1) travels to Kapa‘a on Tuesday. The JV team starts the evening at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game at 7 p.m.
