KOLOA — Despite talk of a meeting between The Shops at Koloa ownership and Koloa community members to discuss the trees next week, developer David Nelson said he has no definite plans to be on-island, let alone meet with anyone.
“I haven’t arranged any meetings,” Nelson said.
Nelson declined to comment further on the monkeypod trees.
Stacey Wong, trustee for the Knudsen Trust, which owns the land on which the project sits, also confirmed that there are no plans to meet with the community.
The monkeypod trees in Koloa dodged a widely suspected removal date Wednesday, though there has been no change to plans to remove some 30 trees.
“We feel like it’s a bit of a victory that the trees weren’t cut down,” Jeri DiPietro of GMO-Free Kaua‘i said.
Koloa community members are holding a Save the Trees Block Party in Old Koloa Town from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday with a candlelight vigil at sunset.
DiPietro said she still hopes that the community and the developer will have a chance to interface on the issue sometime in the near future.
