HANAPEPE — Kapa‘a High School’s varsity boys soccer team survived a physical soccer match yesterday in Hanapepe and came up with a 4-3 win over Waimea High School.
With all the pushing and tripping occurring during the game, Waimea was given four yellow cards. Kapa‘a received two.
The Warriors were up 2-1 with goals from Dylan James and Chance Bukoski, but Waimea took charge late in the first half to gain the lead. Wyatt Chicoine was able to cut from the right to launch one into the net to tie the game.
A foul in the box sent Waimea’s Aaron Vea to the line and up by one.
Kapa‘a had ample chances to reclaim the lead with corner kicks from Adam Kerlin. Two of those corners resulted in goals that didn’t count. One of Kerlin’s kicks curved out of bounds before coming into play, nullifying the goal by Ian Lactaotao.
A confident Waimea went into the half with the lead. It was the Menehune’s second time this season holding a lead.
The Warriors returned to the field in the second half a more aggressive team. Kerlin crossed a lateral to the center for Bukoski to slide in for the goal. With the game tied at three apiece, Bukoski took every chance he got to shoot.
Waimea’s goalie Keonimana Shigematsu fumbled a shot from Bukoski, but it tumbled out to save a goal. Bukoski would get another shot with two men on and banked it with a right-foot boot.
Kapaa’s boys improve to 3-0-1 while Waimea remains winless at 0-4
On the girls side, Kapa‘a narrowly beat Waimea 2-0.
In the first half, Kapa‘a’s Christine Yotsuda ran a trick play off a free kick. Yotsuda set up and rolled the ball to a ready-to-strike Larissa Crain who launched it past Waimea’s wall.
Waimea was able to hold them off for the rest of the half and well into the second. But Crain took advantage of a floating pass to the center to head the ball in for Kapa‘a’s final goal.
Kapa‘a’s girls remain undefeated so far this season.
