The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kauai are teaming up this year, and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through the Zonta /The Garden Island Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. The names have been changed to protect their privacy. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Gift certificates and used or new items, while appreciated, should not be submitted.
Kawehi moves
into a studio
Kawehi just moved into a studio after living in her friend’s garage for a year. Kawehi has many health issues and does not seek any help choosing to deal with them on her own; it’s difficult to do on her fixed income and all of her money goes to paying rent and utilities. Kawehi just needs a little help to get her through this difficult time.
Young Kathy needs some toys
Young Kathy is almost two years old but hindered by development delays and abnormal behavior. Kathy receives therapy and psychological services, partially as a result of having lived in so many homes due to her mother’s drug abuse. Kathy now resides in a stable and loving home but her caretakers would appreciate some toys which Kathy doesn’t have because she moved around constantly, and some clothing for this season.
Single mom Kalei, 24, going back to school
Single mother Kalei, 24, is caring for her 1-year-old son Ikaika. Kalei works part time and is in the process of enrolling in Kauai Community College to increase her income level so she can better provide for her son. Currently, she only has a handful of dollars after she pays all of her bills. She would be so thankful this Christmas if she received a car seat and stroller or any assistance at all.
