Tiffany Ikeda-Simao managed to slice a shot right between Waimea defender Josie Jacinto and goalie Jazzelyn Bradbury for the final score of the night as Kaua‘i High School’s girls soccer team shut out 5-0 last night at Vidinha Stadium.
Kaua‘i (2-1-1) and Waimea (0-3) went scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the night until Kaua‘i’s Brandi Gomes cut up the right side and crossed one to the opposite post for the first of her three goals.
Less than two minutes later, Kaua‘i’s Ashlyn Ubongen got tripped up inside the box which set up her penalty kick and Kaua‘i’s second goal. Ubongen was tripped again for another PK, but left the game for the rest of the half. Gomes took Ubongen’s PK to put Kaua‘i up 3-0.
That was the score going into the half and the game went stale for the second half.
Kaua‘i came real close when three Raiders broke away to pass the Menehune defenders to draw Bradbury out of the box. With an open net, Waimea’s Kolonahe Arquette was able to rush back and make the sliding block to save a goal.
Halfway through, Gomes would score again, finishing the game with a hat trick. Ikeda-Simao was moved up from the back to play offense and scored while up there only for a short time.
On the boys side, Kaua‘i came up with its third win in a row last night, beating Waimea 3-1.
Waimea struck first and had its first lead of the season when Matthew Viescas scored early. But that lasted only a few minutes as Kaua‘i’s Seth Quisel answered with a goal.
Kaua‘i’s Canaan Bernard drew Waimea goalie Keonimana Shigematsu out forcing two of the Menehune defenders to fall back. Their moves weren’t fast enough as Bernard launched one to the back corner.
Shigematsu, although quick with his reflexes in the box, gets tricked into pushing up. Shigematsu was drawn out again in the second half to leave a completely open goal for Kaua‘i’s Keala Lovell.
Waimea next hosts Kapa‘a High School on Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
The junior varsity squads will start the day with morning games. Varsity will play in the afternoon.
