KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a High School’s Chance Bukoski scored three goals in the first half to help the Warriors gain a marginal lead over Waimea High School yesterday at the Kapa‘a New Town Park.
Kapa‘a was up four scores at the half before beating Waimea 8-0.
“(Kapa‘a) played well,” said Waimea head coach Ken Morikawa. “They’re faster than us. Every time we regained possession, we gave the ball right back to them.”
Dylan James scored two goals. Caleb Sarsona, Ikaika Fuerte and Pedro Rupert each scored one goal.
“We just have to keep working hard and make sure we stay healthy,” said Kapa‘a assistant coach Todd Fuerte. A few of the Warriors sat out games due to injury or sickness.
But despite the score, Fuerte said there is still the potential for the players to improve.
“Our potential is only equal to our work ethic, so we just have to keep working and improve on a few things,” he said.
Over on the girls side, Kapa‘a beat Waimea 3-0. Kapa‘a’s Jocelyn Enrique scored in the first half to give the Warriors the slight edge.
But a slip up by a Waimea player accidentally put a goal in the net, but not for the Menehune.
The ball ricocheted off the defensive player’s back to pop right to the goal in Kapa‘a’s favor.
Kapa‘a’s Kalia Mayer scored another goal to put them up 3-0 going into the half.
But the Menehune were able to hold the Warriors off for the second half holding them at the idle score.
Waimea had promising chances from several breakaways from Cayla Kitabayashi
