The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kauai are teaming up this year, and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through the Zonta/The Garden Island Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size.
The names have been changed to protect their privacy. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Gift certificates and used or new items, while appreciated, should not be submitted.
Baby Angela overcomes congestive heart failure
Denise and Lucas have three young children: Noah age 6; Israel age 2; and Angela age 10 months.
When Denise brought Angela in for her checkup not too long ago, Angela was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
The physician told Denise that her baby needed surgery immediately and it could only be performed on the Mainland. Lucas took a month off of work to fly to California with his wife and baby.
The surgery was successful. Baby Angela has been gaining weight and is doing much better.
The family has been trying very hard to get back on their feet after this medical emergency. The parents would like to have new clothes, shoes and toys for their children.
Sam needs some clothes
Sam is living in a house by himself. He is on fixed income at the moment and has been patiently awaiting the completion of his denture.
He has low self-esteem because he cannot smile with a full set of teeth.
He feels that people look down on him and would respond to him better if he had his beautiful smile suplemented with his denture.
As soon as he gets his denture, he will be more confident when he looks for a job.
Sam would appreciate some shoes, pants and shirts to help him with his interviews and daily living.
Sunshine could use ointment for eczema
Sunshine was homeless for more than a year and used to live in her van.
She has recently moved into housing and is receiving set income, but needs extra help because she has a mental condition and is also suffering from severe eczema.
It would be a delight for her if she received some ointments to soothe her skin, as well as clothing and food.
A microwave could also help Sunshine cook food easily.
