HANAPEPE — Kaua‘i High School’s boys and girls varsity soccer teams beat Waimea High School yesterday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Kaua‘i’s boys won 4-0. The girls won 3-0.
Kaua‘i struck first, but Waimea was the first to get the ball in the net. That goal was waived as a Waimea player was called offsides. Waimea’s Aaron Vea got a good look when he drew Kaua‘i’s goalie Colson Fernandez away from the net. Vea’s shot fell short, hitting the left post.
Kaua‘i was able to come up with two goals before the half.
Michael Fujikawa scored one from the right and Josiah Motosue took a shot that went right through the legs of Waimea’s goalie Keonimana Shigematsu.
In the second half, Waimea had another opportunity to score off a corner kick from Vea. But the ball floated right into the hands of Fernandez.
Midway through the second, Kaua‘i’s Seth Quisel scored to put the Raiders up by 3 points. A hard kick from Donovan Refamonte ripped through the air and past Waimea’s defenders to cap the game at 4-0.
For the girls, Kaua‘i’s Shannon Pablo put the Raiders up a goal early on. A few plays later, Pablo shot a cross to Brandi Gomes, who took advantage of Waimea’s rookie goalie Jazzelyn Bradbury’s juggling act and was able to put the ball past her.
In the second half, Skye Shimabukuru got past a tripped up Josie Jacinto to score the Raiders’ final goal of the night.
The Menehune next face the Warriors of Kapa‘a High School starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Kapa‘a New Town Park.
