The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kauai are teaming up this year, and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through the Zonta /The Garden Island Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. The names have been changed to protect their privacy. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted. Gift certificates and used or new items, while appreciated, should not be submitted.
Bed linens for Victoria
Victoria is single and recently moved into new housing. As an elderly person receiving Social Security, she tries to budget her money very carefully to afford rent, electricity, food, utilities and other expenses. What she did not anticipate was the cost of moving. She would greatly appreciate a new couch and bed linens in her new place.
Matthew and brother need
a Christmas surprise
Kehau is a single mother of two young children. Matthew, age 3, is a special needs child who requires 24-hour care. Matthew has lived most of his life in the hospital because of his disability. All of Matthew’s hospital bills forced Kehau to be homeless for a short time because there was no room in her income for rent. This was a major problem because Mathew needed electricity for his medical equipment. Soon after, Kehau gave birth to Kasey, now 2 months old, and they were able to move into permanent housing with the help of a rental subsidy. The home is small but adequate, though it provides little storage space for the children’s belongings and Matthew’s equipment. They could really use shelves and toys for the children as surprise Christmas presents.
Out of transitional housing
Nobu and Mary are an elderly couple with limited income. They are still paying off debts which they incurred in the past. Nobu and Mary used to live in transitional housing and now are able to live in an apartment on their own. The coulple would welcome waterproof bed coverings and other bedding. They also need depends and ensure drinks to aid their health.
