The annual Lights on Rice parade starts tonight at 6:30 p.m.
The parade will begin at Vidinha Stadium, head down Ho‘olako and Rice streets, and end on ‘Eiwa Street at the Historic County Building.
This is the 9th annual Lights on Rice parade and is only one of three major events that take place in the vicinity of the Historic County Building tonight.
The Lights on Rice rundown:
• Opening at 10 a.m. and running until 8 p.m., the Kauai Museum hosts its annual Christmas craft fair which offers a variety of gifts, crafts and entertainment.
• The Kaiola Canoe Club is offering its traditional Hawaiian plate lunch for diners, joining other vendors like the West Kaua‘i Methodist Church which provides its homemade malasadas, and Joe Grace with his KJ Lunch Wagon ohana who serve up their well-known roast pork plates.
• At 6 p.m., the Festival of Lights will debut its lights and displays at the Historic County Building with an opening ceremony followed by the Lights on Rice parade unfolding before an audience of several thousand people, residents and visitors alike.
• The parade route begins at the intersections of Hardy and Rice streets, works its way up the hill to ‘Eiwa Street where it turns right, passing right in front of the museum’s fair offerings.
Once parked, the public is invited to view the floats up close and meet their creators and neighbors.
In the true spirit of the island, remember that trash goes in the trash containers, not on the ground.
Street closures
To accommodate the parade, the Kaua‘i Police Department will close off all county streets along the parade route, from about 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., including Ho‘olako, Hardy, ‘Eiwa and Rice streets, as well as all feeder roads to Rice Street.
Motorists will need to seek alternate routes to get to their destinations during the parade.
