The Panthers of the Kekaha Pop Warner Association Junior Pee Wees celebrated like they won the Super Bowl Saturday when they shut out the National City White team 12-0 in the Sun Bowl in San Diego.
The Panthers, who were 0-7-1 during the regular season, won behind two touchdown scores by Keanu Malama. The Panthers were the only team out of the three Kekaha Pop Warner tackle teams in the football team at the invitational to come out with a win.
The Kekaha Chargers Midget squad lost to the West Conference champions, Valencia Park Hornets, 6-0 in the early matchup and the day ended when the Kekaha Seahawks Pee Wee squad lost to the National City Diablos 38-28.
The Sun Bowl was a football invitational hosted by the San Diego Pop Warner Association. The trip for the Kekaha teams included 57 student athletes between the ages of 8 and 15 years old, 21 coaches and staff members and 40 of the association’s supporters.
The teams were also treated to a day at SeaWorld yesterday. Today, the teams will visit Disneyland. They are scheduled to return tomorrow night.
Sherry Camat Emayo coordinated the trip. The head coaches of the Chargers, Panthers and Seahawks are Al Emayo, Cucu Apilado and Leighton Amaki.
