The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kauai are teaming up this year, and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through the Zonta /The Garden Island Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. The names have been changed to protect their privacy. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted. Gift certificates and used or new items, while appreciated, should not be submitted.
Starting a family together in homelessness
Beginning a family is exciting and Adam and Annie have been blessed with two children in their start as a happy family. They want to create an safe place to protect and nurture their family, as well as provide a better education for their children; all of the aforementioned are difficult to obtain while Adam, Annie and their new family are homeless. Even though Adam has found employment with Annie hoping to join him soon, they do not have enough money to get into a home yet. They would love to find a home before this holiday so their children can wake up from their bedrooms inside a house instead of being homeless for Christmas. This family would appreciate some financial help this Christmas.
Lucia has no nearby family
Lucia is 87 years old. Her family lives on the opposite side of Kaua‘i and are unable to visit her on a regular basis, which causes them to worry about her as she lives alone. Due to her age, Lucia is limited in her ability to maintain her living conditions so her house is not always clean. Her case manager checks on her and has offered assistance to have her home cleaned but she is not comfortable with letting strangers into her home. Lucia could use some new clothes and some help with food this holiday.
Elderly couple would be grateful for new clothing
Nobue and Masako live on the North Shore. Nobue has had a bad year because of illness; he was recently confined to a hospital bed due to severe back pain and numbness in the legs. Masako is the caregiver and she has to attend to him all hours of the day and the night, leaving her with little time for anything else. Nobue also suffers from vision and hearing impairment, heart problems, high blood pressure and shingles. They would be very grateful this holiday season with some new clothing and groceries.
