HANAPEPE — Jonathan Tangalin passed for two touchdowns and ran in two of his own to lead the West Midgets to a 32-22 victory over the East, Saturday.
Earlier in the day, the Junior Pee Wee West team edged out the East 14-6, and the Pee Wee West team blanked the East, 30-0, to complete a West sweep in the annual bowl game that benefits charity.
Tangalin’s first touch of the pigskin netted a score for the West Midgets in their encounter as the QB from Kekaha connected with Kyle Flemming for a 64-yard score after the receiver found open ground after outrunning his defenders.
K.J. Morikawa, who had come from an earlier Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation pre-season series against the Mililani Trojans, had his boot limbered up to grace the score for the first of three successful point-after boots.
Tangalin followed his opening score on a 54-yard keeper breakout on his second touch of the game. The Morikawa PAT boot gave the West an early 16-0 with 7:33 remaining in the opening quarter.
Following a defensive second quarter, Tangalin found Paul Udarbe on a 51-yard scoring hit with just 44 seconds remaining in the half. Morikawa’s second PAT boot gave the West its 24-0 halftime lead.
But the East, adjusting its forces, came back as Conner Chandler of the Kapa‘a Eagles crashed through the line for a 65-yard scoring run. Bronson Aiwohi, finishing 2-3 in PAT boots, put the East on the scoreboard just 16 seconds into the third frame.
The West answered on another long drive with Tangalin capping that clock-chewing drive on a 6-yard run to the end zone. Morikawa’s third PAT kick pushed the West to a 32-8 reading.
Chandler answered with two more scores, one in the third quarter, a 70-yard run, and another in the final period, a 54-yard pass reception, to finalize the score 32-22.
Ikaika Wilson and Howard Kanahele scored on touchdown runs to give the JPW West its 14-6 edge over the JPW East.
Wilson netted a 64-yard scoring run early in the first quarter, and Ryan Ruiz booted the point-after for the 8-0 bulge.
But the JPW East broke a defensive slugfest five seconds into the final period when Kobe Nagahisa broke the scoring plane on a 2-yard push.
A failed point-after run kept the West in the lead 8-6 before Kanahele found paydirt on a 1-yard charge.
Isaac Fierro ran for a TD and threw for one to lead the PW West to its 30-0 shutout over the PW East.
Darrin Fernandez opened the scorebooks with a 28-yard scoring run, and Keoki Palau booted the PAT for the West’s first score.
That set up Fierro’s first score, a 2-yard run for a 14-0 first quarter reading.
Fierro hit Chava Delos Reyes on a 31-yard scoring pass with 1:37 showing in the third quarter for the West’s next score that settled at 22-0 following Kaumakani Aguinaldo’s point-after boot.
Aguinaldo graced that effort with a 1-yard charge into the end zone just five seconds into the final period.
Fierro graced that TD with a successful point-after boot for the 30-0 final.
