Kaua‘i High School quarterback Andrew Renaud is known for his throwing, but on Friday, he was on the receiving end. The senior received the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation’s Player of the Year award. The Coach of the Year award went to first-year varsity head coach Derek Borrero.
Kaua‘i is no stranger to the KIF All Star awards. For several years now, they’ve dominated the annual list and this year, half of the all stars are from Kaua‘i High. The Red Raiders led the league in scoring, rushing offense and total offense.
Making repeat appearances on the KIF list are Michael Julian, Scholar Arakaki, Jonathan Gebauer, Chad Koga, Darren Satta and Tyrus Ceria-Lux.
Waimea High School had 10 player on the list. Kapa‘a High School received three spots.
For girls volleyball, Player of the Year honors went to Tatum Gonsalves of Waimea. Gonsalves, who was playing her first year as a starter, transformed herself into a dominant role player and led the Menehune in kills. The Menehune won their second straight KIF title this year and finished sixth at the state tournament. Head coach Chad Delanoza received Coach of the Year honors for the second year in a row.
Waimea’s girls volleyball team took six of the seven spots on the all star list. The only spot not occupied by a Menehune was Mailika Napoleon of Kapa‘a who received the honor for the setter position. Waimea’s Brytney Yadoa-Lanning was the only current Menehune to make repeat appearance as an all star.
Football and volleyball are the only two fall sports in which Player and Coach of the Year awards are given.
