Ocean Cable’s Channel 16 is featuring two Kaua‘i filmmakers this week on the popular television series, “Reel Stories.”
Teresa Tico and Joel Guy, both filmmakers from Hanalei, are interviewed by Reel Stories producer, Don Brown, in this week’s program that features ocean sports films.
Tico’s film, “Hawaiki Nui Va’a,” tells the story of the epic, three-day outrigger canoe race between the islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Taha’a and Bora Bora in French Polynesia. The annual event draws over 120 teams from 80 countries and is considered the “Super Bowl” of canoe racing.
Tico shot the footage for the film from a speed boat that kept up with the paddlers from the island of Huahine. Team “Fare Ara” from Huahine has a connection to the island of Kaua‘i. Team captain Mai Tai Danielson is married to Hanalei resident Katy Vogel and Fare Ara team paddlers make frequent visits to Kaua‘i’s North Shore.
The final moments of the film zero in on a close finish at Matira Point on the island of Bora Bora where Team Fare Ara and the Shell Va‘a Team, winner of both 2006 and 2007 Molokai Hoe races, battle for first-place honors, while thousands of spectators standing in waist-deep water cheer them on at the finish line.
Guy’s latest film, “Tamba TV With Andy Irons,” features the three-time World surfing champion from Hanalei. Guy talks about how his lifelong friendship with the Irons brothers has allowed him to produce films about their surfing exploits and travel adventures.
One of Guy’s earlier films, “Crossing The Line,” featured Bruce irons and was a smash hit, selling in bookstores, surf shops, and Web sites. Guy, who explains why music selection is such an important part of making a surf film, says he is grateful to Kaua‘i musician and songwriter Shiloh Pa who allowed Guy to use his songs for the Andy Irons soundtrack.
“Reel Stories” airs on OC16 this Sunday at 11:30 p.m.; Monday at 5:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m.; Tuesday at 12:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.; Wednesday at 4 a.m., 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.; and Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
