Kylie Moniz’s smile and optimistic outlook was not dampened Sunday.
Instead of being surrounded by motorcycles and cars in the parking lot of the convention hall, Moniz was instead surrounded by a sea of gray T-shirts as he helped distribute the commemorative T-shirts for the Kaua‘i Special Olympics Benefit Ride.
That ride was supposed to have taken place Sunday, but with the heavy clouds hanging overhead and the asphalt slick with water from a steady drizzle, the event was postponed until Nov. 18.
“I’m just selling T-shirts today,” Moniz said, his smile flashing. “We were supposed to have the ride, but there’s just too much rain.”
Shelly Gerardo, one of the Kaua‘i Special Olympics volunteers, said the rescheduling works for everyone except the food which was already scheduled.
“We can’t do it on Nov. 11 because that’s the Veterans Day service,” Gerardo said. “But when I spoke with Harvey Maeda of the classic car club, he said the 18th works.”
Jocelyn Barriga, the Kaua‘i Special Olympics coordinator, said the drawings and prizes will all be done on Nov. 18.
Among the prizes being given away are several trips contributed by Tom Leighton and Two Wheels.
One of them is a trip to Cancun. Another is a Carnival Cruise. The final trip is to Las Vegas.
“Our sincere appreciation goes out to Tom Leighton and Two Wheels for once again offering such an amazing grand prize for the Special Olympics Kaua‘i Benefit Ride,” Gerardo said in an e-mail release.
Gerardo said everything stays almost the same for Nov. 18, with the exception of a possible change in location.
Registration will take place between 8:45 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. with the convoy rolling out at 10 a.m.
A silent auction will be available between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. with lunch being served at 11 a.m.
The convoy will leave Lihu‘e and travel West to Waimea, returning through Po‘ipu before ending in Lihu‘e.
Gerardo said the Ride is open to motorcycles, hot rods, classics, imports and the general public.
A minimum $20 donation earns a free event T-shirt and a commemorative fifth anniversary pin.
