KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a High School has a lot to celebrate about today.
The Warriors (1-5 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation, 2-8 overall) won its first and last regular-season game of the year last night when Kapa‘a beat Waimea High School 27-7 on homecoming night.
This was the Warriors’ first regular-season win in three seasons.
Waimea’s Jayrald Watanabe was first to get on the boards in the first quarter when he ran for a 23-yard touchdown. He set the mood for what looked like a routine game for Waimea.
But Kapa‘a answered that with a touchdown of its own when, Kapa‘a running back Daniel Lizama ran for huge punt return to put them in the end zone. That set up the play for Mauka Rapozo who rushed for a one-yard TD.
Kapa‘a got ahead when Brandon Chong came up with a 25-yard run and was stopped on the one-yard line. Chavis Kupihea on the quarterback keep threw himself over the goal line for Kapa‘a’s second TD to give them the edge going into the half.
Then Kapa‘a exploded in the second half, dominating the game. Lizama was able to come up with one-yard TD then scored a four yarder with 1:30 left to play.
Lizama had 13 carries for 92 yards and running back Caleb Sarsona ran for 7 carries and 79 yards. Sarsona was later named the player of the game.
Waimea’s Ikaika Rapacon had eight carries for 59 carries.
Joseph Velasco was 3-for-3 in extra point attempts and Ian Lactaotao hit the final extra point.
The team drenched head coach Steve Kaui with a large bucket of Gatorade in celebration for win in which they were slapped with 13 penalties and still were able to dominate and come up with the much-needed win.
