Earlier this year, Philip Wang, director general of Taipei’s Economic and Cultural Office in Honolulu, came to Kaua‘i to discuss the roles that his country plays in the global economy.
Noting the similarities between the Penghu Islands and Kaua‘i, Wang suggested that a sister city relationship be established that would be of mutual benefit.
The mayor and the County Council accepted Wang’s proposal, and subsequent plans were made for a formal ceremony to take place in Penghu.
On Monday, the mayor will depart for Penghu and Taipei, and will join a small Kaua‘i delegation: Kaui Tanaka, administrative aide to the mayor; Shu-Li Tsai, vice president of the Kaua‘i Chinese Association; Kristyn Ishibashi, a hula dancer; and Joyce Okinaka, a musician.
“I look forward to visiting Penghu and Taipei and fostering our friendship ties,” said the mayor, according to a press release. “It will also provide an opportunity for me to explore economic development opportunities for Kaua‘i.”
While in Penghu, the mayor will meet with his counterpart, Magistrate Chien-fa Wang, and the chair of their County Council, Chao Ling Liu Chen, and participate in a formal ceremony establishing a sister city relationship with Penghu.
The mayor will also visit Penghu National Park, National Penghu University, an aquatic research center, as well as historical sites in the area.
During his trip to Taipei, the mayor plans to meet officials with the Department of Health, the Agricultural Council and the Environmental Protection Agency, and take a guided tour.
The mayor is scheduled to return to Kaua‘i on Monday, Nov. 12.
Located between Taiwan and China, the Penghu Islands consist of 64 islands that vary in size, 20 of which are populated. Like Kaua‘i, they have pristine beaches, an abundance of marine and bird life, and a rich cultural history.
Currently, fishing is the main industry in Penghu. Agate mining is another important industry. There is also a strong effort to continue to develop tourism in the area, with an emphasis on sustainable use of resources and sustainable economic development.
