HANAPEPE — Trent Allianic delivered a huge win for Kaua‘i High School as the Red Raiders won their fifth straight Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title last night. defeating Waimea High School 14-10.
The junior quarterback, who made his first start of the season last night, was the team’s leading rusher of the game with 10 carries for 47 yards and was later named the Player of the Game.
Kaua‘i’s first touchdown came in the second quarter when Allianic connected with Kelii Ruiz for a 4-yard TD.
A few plays later, Waimea’s Kelly Batis recovered a Kaua‘i fumble which set up the plays resulting in an Ikaika Rapacon 1-yard TD.
Waimea pulled ahead with eight seconds left in the half when Batis kicked a KIF record 52-yard field goal to bring the Menehune to 10-7.
A questionable fumble in the third quarter recovered by Kaua‘i set up the plays for the Raiders’ winning TD. Allianic passed a 15-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tyrus Ceria-Lux.
Waimea might have had the chance to win it in the fourth quarter when the Menehune landed on the Kaua‘i 14-yard line. Waimea quarterback Jayrald Watanabe on the keep ran for the goal line, broke away from Kaua‘i defenders and somehow lost the ball for a fumble.
With a Kaua‘i recovery, it seemed as though the game was over, but there were still a few minutes left of play. When the Menehune regained possession with less than a minute to go. Waimea’s Cody Owen launched a long pass and was intercepted by Bo Valeria to give possession back to Kaua‘i.
Kaua‘i finished the game with 200 yards of total offense (117 rushing, 83 passing).
Waimea had 166 yards in total offense (146 rushing, 20 passing).
Defensively for Kaua‘i, Matt Parr had eight tackles. Waimea’s Watanabe also had eight.
Kaua‘i will now receive the No. 3 ranking going into First Hawaiian Bank Division II State Football Championships next month. The Raiders will host the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association qualifier at 7 p.m. on Nov. 17 at Vidinha Stadium.
