Keala Lovell was at the right place at the right time. The 5-foot-11 defensive back came up with two big interceptions in the first half for Kaua‘i High School as the Red Raiders defeated the Warriors of Kapa‘a High School 34-0 last night at Vidinha Stadium.
Kaua‘i had a nearly explosive first half scoring the majority of their points then. John Gebauer started off by catching a 10-yard pass from Andrew Renaud for Kaua‘i’s first touchdown of the night.
Renaud followed that up with a 24-yard pass to Tyrus Ceria-Lux for another TD. Renaud ran in a 5-yard TD which was set up by Lovell’s second pick. Then with 1:06 to the half, Austin Racca recovered a Kapa‘a fumble for a TD.
Kaua‘i wouldn’t score again until the fourth quarter when Trent Allianic, filling in for Renaud, ran a 10-yard rushing TD. That was his first rushing TD of the season.
Kaua‘i (4-1 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation, 5-1 overall) registered 320 yards of total offense, 141 rushing and 179 passing. Renaud was 15-for-23 for 158 yards and two picks.
Kapa‘a (0-5, 1-5) had 161 yards of total offense, 68 rushing and 93 passing.
Lovell was also named the Player of the game.
Kaua‘i is now in a must-win situation for next week’s game if the Raiders want to win the KIF title. If Waimea High School (3-1, 6-1) wins over Kaua‘i, the two teams will be tied for the season. Next week’s game will be at the Hanapepe Stadium with kickoff at 7:35 p.m.
In the junior varsity match up, Kaua‘i won 20-14. For the full story, see tomorrow’s paper.
