LIHU‘E n The Rotary Club of Kalepa Sunrise distributed dictionaries to third grade students at King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School last month. The dictionary distribution is part of a statewide effort by Rotarians to promote literacy. The goal is to give dictionaries to all third-grade students in the state.
Literacy is one of the focus areas for Kalepa Sunrise and Rotary International. “Assisting with educational efforts and providing our youth with the tools necessary to be successful in school provides them with a solid foundation for success as they grow up. We are helping to build strong communities by providing students with educational opportunities to help them grow and become productive members of our community,” state Tim Hoxie, President of the Rotary Club of Kalepa Sunrise.
Rotarians visited King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School and passed out the dictionaries to the students. The students also received highlighters donated by American Savings Bank. Students were able to immediately write their names in their dictionaries and begin using them. Activities were conducted to encourage the students to use their dictionary and to learn the references included.
This is the third year the Kalepa Sunrise Rotarians have participated in this program supporting King Kaumualii School third graders. Kalepa Sunrise also provides dictionaries to Ni‘ihau School.
The Rotary Club of Kalepa Sunrise meets on Tuesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. at Gaylord’s.
