George “Keoki” Kaneholani
George “Keoki” Kaneholani died at home on Sept. 18, 2007, at the age of 57.
Born July 9, 1950, he was a caretaker of the “Lihi” as well as an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents Herbert Kelii Kaneholani and Elizabeth Sarah Kaneholani (Kaheana); brother and sister-in-law Harry Poe and Gina Kaneholani; brother David Kailikini Kaneholani; sister and brother-in-law Rosemary and Gregory Sanay and first wife LaFrance “Ululani” Kaneholani (Kauwe).
He is survived by his wife Marilyn Kaneholani (Matias-Reyes); children William (Shannon) Kaneholani, Naomi Kaiwi, Swansie Aki, Steven Aki, Savannah Aki and Starlynn “Mieko” Kaupu; grandchildren Austin, McKenna and Haley Kaneholani; brothers Herbert (Star) Kaneholani, Billy and Jerry Kaneholani, John (Leila) Kaneholani, Daniel (Eva) Kaneholani and Clement Kaneholani; sisters Olinda (Yukio) Higashi, Midge Asai, Miriam Kupihea, Olandra Kaleiohi, and Tatiana Kaneholani Ryan; ex-wife Cheryllynn Kaneholani and sister-in-law Charlotte Kaneholani; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends may join the family in celebrating the life of George Kaneholani at noon on Sunday, Sept. 30, the “Lihi” (the Kapa‘a small boat harbor).
Edward Takanishi
Edward “E.T.” Ikuo Takanishi, of Kekaha, died Sept. 8, 2007, in Honolulu at the age of 71.
Born March 27, 1936, on Kaua‘i, he loved sports, especially golf, raised orchids and enjoyed music. After graduation from Waimea High School, E.T. entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Signal Corps stationed in various parts of the world. He received an honorable discharge in June 1957.
In June 1962, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recognized his special abilities and offered him a posiiton in its Housing & Community Development department. He held various positions in the Housing Division including deputy director, chief architect, deputy chief underwriter, chief underwriter, chief appraiser, subdivision appraiser and appraiser. He retired from HUD in June 1985 to start his own business, Edward I. Takanishi, Consultants Inc. dba real estate appraiser and held his real estate license with Bob Tanaka Inc. as property manager.
E.T. relocated to Guam and opened another appraisal business and became a successful independent real estate fee appraiser for Guam, Saipan and the Northern Mariana Islands. He held his real estate broker’s license here. Upon retirement, he returned to Kekaha and took over and managed his father’s Hale Taka Apartments.
E.T. leaves behind his wife Yvonne after 22 years of togetherness; sons Dane (Joy Ouchi), Darrell (Lyn), and Ralph Fukumoto, all of Honolulu; daughters Dorianne (Rick) Rivera of Orange County, Calif., Lena Lei (Brodrick) Tsubouchi of ‘Ewa Beach; Yvette (Brad) Fukumoto Park of Kane‘ohe; and Lavonne Fukumoto of Kekaha; brother Wilfred Osamu (Eleanor) of Cerritos, Calif; nephews Eric and Dean Takanishi of California; one grand-nephew; grandchildren Chad, Todd, Lexi, Davin, Renesha, Mana, Kaimana, Na‘i, Bryson, Braden, Brianne,; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by son Dirk.
Special services were held in Honolulu at Borthwick Mortuary on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Final services will be held on Kaua‘i Saturday, Sept. 29, at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha with service from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mass starts at 11 a.m. Honorable military inurnment to follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. The family requests aloha attire.
Judy Freitas
Judy Freitas, of Koloa, died Sept. 21, 2007, at Queen’s Hospital at the age of 46.
Born Nov. 17, 1960, in New Mexico, she was office manager for Stiglmeier, Albert W., CPA Inc.
She is survived by her husband Leonard Freitas of Koloa, sons Brandon Freitas of Koloa, Bryson Freitas of Koloa, and Travis (Christina) Freitas of California; daughters Kitty (Brad) Celebrado of Puhi and Tracy Freitas of Missouri; hanai son Kalama Reis; parents James and Coleen Lawshe of Kalaheo; brothers James (Cindy) Lawshe of Arizona, Edwin (Valerie) Lawshe of Washington, Barry Lawshe of Colorado, and John Lawshe of Kalaheo; seven grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at St. Raphael’s Church in Koloa, where Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Raphael’s Church cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Paul Panui
Paul Panui died Sept. 23, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 69.
Born July 24, 1938, in Hawai‘i, he was a retired firefighter (operator).
He was preceded in death by his parents James and Margaret Panui; sister Kanani Kahaunaele; and brother-in-law Hidemi Nakamura; son Paul Anthony “Maka” Panui; son-in-law Kalama Nobriga; father-in-law Frank Bukoski; and brother-in-law Kenneth Bukoski.
He is survived by his wife Elaine Panui, daughters Taddy (Joe) Penzetta, Nani (Greg) Sadora and Kana (Lono Brede Jr.) Nobriga; son Chad Panui; hanai daughter Kaila Naholoholo; grandchildren Kalei Sadora, Shyanne Sadora, Nicholas Penzetta, Torey Nobriga, Skyler Sadora and “Bullas” Brede; brother James (Boots) Panui; sisters Merrilee (Mike) Chandler and Napua Nakamura; brother-in-law David Kahaunaele; mother-in-law Elizabeth Bukoski; brothers-in-law Frank (Lynn) Bukoski and Sam (Lola) Bukoski; sisters-in-law Peggy (Davison) McCallum and Rosie (Uli‘i Castor) Bukoski.
A celebration of his life will be on Sunday, Sept. 30, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa. Friends may visit with the family from noon with the service at 3 p.m. Borthwick Mortuary handled arrangements.
Saturnina Cabinatan
Saturnina Ababon Cabinatan, of Hanama‘ulu, died at her home on Sept. 6, 2007, at the age of 91.
Born in Cebu, Philippines, on June 6, 1916, she was a cannery worker in Kapa‘a. Preceded in death by son Leonardo; daughter Gloria Coleman and daughter-in-law Yolanda, she is survived by sons Panfilo Cabinatan and Clifford (Kelly) Cabinatan, both of Hanama‘ulu; daughters Florence (Edward) Feguis of Honolulu and Viviana (Julian Sr.) Luczon of Wailua; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Lihue Ward; service officiated by Bishop Venzon will begin at 10 a.m. followed by burial at Lihue Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Susumu “Sus” Oishi
Susumu “Sus” Oishi of Kaua‘i died Sept. 14, 2007, at the age of 80.
Born April 14, 1927, in Waimea, he was a retired communications technician with GTE.
He is survived by his wife Lorraine Oishi, son Kenneth Oishi, daughters Sharon Rivers and Linda Osakoda; three grandchildren, one great grandchild, brothers George Oishi and Tamotsu Oishi; sisters Miyoko Hama and Yuriko Hamada.
Memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at Kapa‘a Jodo Mission.
Arrangements are being handled by Moanalua Mortuary.
Dennis ‘Gene’ Peters
Dennis “Gene” Peters of Honolulu died on Sept. 23, 2007, at Straub Clinic & Hospital at the age of 57.
Born June 10, 1950, in Lihu‘e, he was a trolley bus driver for E Noa Tours.
He is survived by daughters Erin W. Pii (Anthony) Gallion of California; Cecili H. “Poni” Peters and Robyn M. Baldimor; companion Alvina M. Leon; brother Hollis Jay (Isabelle) Peters of Kaua‘i; and two grandchildren.
Ashes wil be scattered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Kewalo Basin on O‘ahu.
On Kaua‘i, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 at Kalapaki Beach Park.
Palani Martin Jr.
Palani Martin Jr., aka Frank Martin Jr. of Hilo and formerly of Kapa‘a, died Sept. 9, 2007, at Hilo Medical Center, at the age of 68.
Born Sept. 7, 1939, in Honolulu, he was a retired truck driver, deacon of Ke Akua Mana Church of the Living God in Waimea, and member of Koa Puna Motorcycle Club.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel where the funeral service will be at 6 p.m. Cremation to follow. Scattering of his ashes will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Laupahoehoe Point. Aloha attire is suggested.
He was preceded in death by son Frank Kunewa, daughter Merilyn Lehuanani Laban; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He is survived by five sons, Derwin (Julia) Kunewa of Hilo, Matthew (Rhonda) Martin of Hilo, Michael (Iwalani) Martin of Anahola, David Martin of Honolulu and Kai Martin of San Diego, Calif.; daughter Iraina (Joseph) Martin of Kapa‘a, hanai daughter Kaleo Adric of Honolulu, sister Barbara Martin of Honolulu; companion Beverly A.K. Martin of Hilo; 32 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Stetson Furtado
Stetson Jamie Anelaokalani “Stilwata” Furtado, of Kekaha, died Sept. 15, 2007, at the age of 20.
Born in Waimea on Dec. 27, 1986, he was employed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc. and MCA.
He enjoyed creating lyrics for his band group called “Modern Marvels.” He was an avid Suzuki motorcyclist; he loved spending quality time with his future fianceé and two children.
Preceded in death by his mother Katherine Pi‘ilani Furtado, he is survived by his fiancée/high school sweetheart Noelani-onamaunaokanani “Mama Noe” Oligo, son Hunter Kama-kaoanalu “Buni-Buni” Furtado-Oligo, daughter StarLee Ann Kwai-lin Ku‘upuapikakeokalaniaina “Talula Ann” Furtado-Oligo; father Frank W. Furtado; brothers Johnathan (Corina) Wong, Stanley, Jaysen, and Taylor Furtado; nephews Kayalea, Kahykana, and Kaela Wong; grandmothers Lei Cano, Marlene Furtado and Florence Muraoka; in-laws Fran and Randy Oligo; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
There will be a memorial motorcycle vehicle run prior to services. Riders will meet at Kauai Harley Davidson lot in Puhi no later than 8:30 a.m. Ride begins at 9 a.m. from Puhi to Kekaha to Borthwick Mortuary, All riders welcome.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Borthwick Mortuary with visitation from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and services beginning at 12:30 p.m. Flowers are welcome and casual attire is suggested. Arrangements were handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Richard K. Becker
Richard K. “Papa Ritchie” Becker, of Kalaheo, died Sept. 18, 2007, at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 88.
Born June 13, 1919, in Pittsburgh, Penn., he was an engineer, small plane pilot and avid sailor, member of S.L.B.Y.C. of California and the Nawiliwili Yacht Club of Kaua‘i.
He is survived by his wife Borita “Bo” Becker; sons David (Janice) Rider of Oregon, Larry (Debbie) Rider of California, Gary (Teri) Rider of California, Mike (Betty) Rider of Delaware, and Joe (Thuy) Rider of California; daughters Dianne Rider of California, Annette (John) Vallow of California, and Tricia (Kaipo) Blake of Hawai‘i; 14 grandchildren, Steven (Kerri) Rider, Amy (Jeremy) Johnson, Shannon (Shane) Jackson, Nathan Rider, Justin Rider, Lori-Jo Rider, Cole Rider, Lucas Rider, Jessica Rider, David Rider, Daniel Rider, Fouad Rider, Bree Kanoe Blake, and Blythe Kahokulea Blake; and eight great-grandchildren Keana, Davin, Holden, and Aubrey-Rose, Maleah, Ainsley, Alex and Yvesie-Plum.
Also surviving are sisters Jean (William) Sigler of New Jersey, Marge Becker (Dean) Hazen of California, Rene (Bill) Harter of Virginia, and Vira (Lyle) Becker McCoy of Penn.; brothers Bob (Binky) Becker, Walter (Ann) Becker and Herb (Audrey) Becker, all of Pennsylvania; numerous nieces and nephews.
Celebration of life will be on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Holy Cross Church. Friends may visit with the family at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m.

Eli B. Ames
Eli B. Ames, former resident of ‘Anini Beach, died Feb. 23, 2007, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the age 91.
Born in Corry, Penn., he is survived by his four children, Lauren of Santa Fe, NM, Murray of Livingston, Mont., Carolyn of Ashland, Ore., and Roger of San Mateo, Calif., as well as seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wives Bernice Olds Ames and Muriel Lawrence Ames and also his brother George Orcutt. A celebration of his life will be held at Christ Memorial Church in Kilauea on Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. Aloha attire is suggested.
