Although some of the 13 children, 42 grandchildren, 196 great grandchildren, and 49 great-great-grandchildren of the late Esteban and Fortunate Largusa were unable to be there, good times were had by family and friends on a three-day family reunion here on Kaua’i. The Largusas got together in July of this year.
Potluck family night was held at the home of Dolly and the late Roy Espina. Smiles, tears and laughter were plenty as everyone got reacquainted and met new relatives.
Smith’s Tropical Paradise was the site of the Saturday night lu‘au. Talented family members kept everyone entertained. A memorial presentation slide show produced by Kylene and Sheldon Espina was the highlight of the night. Emotions ran high as pictures shots were shown on a big screen of recently lost family members. The night was dedicated to Lane “Bobo” Largusa (son of Ben and Fely Largusa), Gregory “Greg” Espina (son of the late Roy Espina and Dolores Largusa Espina), Phillip “Phil” Laymon (husband of Aurea Largusa Laymon), and Rufino “Roy” “Noi” Espina (husband of Dolores Largusa Espina).
Everyone joined the family in singing a medley of past reunion songs. Afterwards “We Are Family” played on the loud speakers and the Largusas did a “soul train” around the party, followed by enough dance music to get everyone’s hearts pumping.
Topper of the weekend was a fun and relaxing picnic at ‘Anini Beach Park. Games were played all day long and the finale was a grand tug-o-war on the beach as the Largusas split up into two teams, with everyone else cheering them on.
It was an unforgettable weekend and many were sad to leave for home. The Kaua‘i Largusas hosted families from Southern and Northern California, Colorado, Texas, O‘ahu, Maui and the Big Island.
