HANAPEPE — Sophomore running back Ikaika Rapacon scored two touchdowns in Waimea High School’s 16-14 upset over Kaua‘i High School last night at the Hanapepe Stadium.
This is the first time that Waimea beat Kaua‘i in four years.
Jayrald Watanabe, for 10 plays, threw 52 yards and had seven tackles. The senior quarterback was also named player of the game.
The game had a bit of an awkward start when the stadium experienced a blackout while Waimea was in the middle of singing its alma mater. The power was out for approximately 15 minutes before the lights slowly began to come back on.
Then it was all Waimea.
On the first drive of the game, Kaua‘i’s starting quarterback Andrew Renaud fumbled the ball. Waimea’s Kelly Batis recovered it to set the Menehune up for a drive.
Watanabe handed it off to Rapacon, who ran for a 38-yard TD.
Kaua‘i answered back with a TD of its own when Renaud threw a 21-yard pass to John Gebauer.
Waimea’s Oni Schmidt had a good running game last night, including one 44-yard run and an 86-yard kickoff return to open the second half.
Kaua‘i’s Michah Yee recovered a fumble and ran for 33 yards late in the fourth quarter to come up with a TD, but Kaua‘i High still came up short.
Waimea finished with 254 yards for offense and 258 rushing. Kaua‘i’s Renaud threw three interceptions.
In the junior varsity game, Kaua‘i won 40-0.
Next week, Waimea plays Kapa‘a High School at the Kapa‘a Complex Stadium. Kaua‘i has the week off.
