Kaua‘i High School goes for its second win of the season tonight against Waimea High School with the varsity game starting at 7 p.m at the Hanapepe Stadium.
The defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champs will try to fight off the Menehune who are trying to bring the winning era back to Waimea.
Kaua‘i has the slight advantage going into the game in that, so far, including the preseason games, it is 3-0. The Red Raiders also got off to a good KIF start last week with a 42-0 shutout of Kapa‘a High School at the Vidinha Stadium.
“We’re going to stick to what we do best,” Kaua‘i High School head football coach Derek Borrero said about his run-and-shoot offense.
“This week we focused on mentally preparing the players for Waimea because it’s going to be a huge game. A lot of people are going to turn out for this game,” Borerro said.
But Waimea is also undefeated. The Menehune, who did not have a game last week, won both their preseason games and are a tougher, more disciplined team now under the coaching of Kyle Linoz then they were in previous years.
“I like the discipline that Kyle has placed onto them. They remind me of the old Waimea that I played against and coached against and that’s what I’m a little concerned about,” Borrero said. “The old Waimea had speed, size and discipline. They’re very much like the teams under Tommy Rita and Pat Perreira, and they’re still running some of their plays now. The 2007 Waimea team resembles a lot of those past teams. We cannot drift because they’re going to score.”
Linoz likes the comparison of his team to the “old Waimea” and said Waimea is ready for the big match-up between the two rival teams.
“We hope we’re like the old Waimea team. They used to win a lot,” Linoz said in reference to Waimea’s 12-year run as KIF champs.
Linoz credits the team with being more mature than a year or so ago and that makes them all the more ready for the game.
“Most of our seniors have played these guys from Kaua‘i High before; they’ve been out there so they have the right mentality to play them.”
For those who can’t make the game, it will be broadcast on KQNG’s AM 570.
