Governor Linda Lingle has ordered state flags at state and county buildings to fly at half-staff tomorrow from sunrise to sunset, in honor of former Kaua‘i County Mayor Eduardo E. Malapit, who died on Aug. 27.
Malapit served as Mayor of Kaua‘i County for four consecutive two-year terms (1974-82). He was the first mayor of Filipino ancestry in the United States.
Prior to his election as mayor, Malapit served on the Kaua‘i County Council for two terms. He also served as the chairman of the Appeals Board for the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
“Mayor Malapit will be remembered for his contributions to the community and his commitment to improving the quality of life on Kaua‘i,” said Lingle, according to a press release. “His dedication to public service and his active involvement in the local community, especially in youth sports and activities, serve as examples for all of us to follow.”
