KILAUEA — A two car, head-on collision at 11:24 p.m. Friday night seriously injured two males, both of whom were transported to Wilcox Hospital, county officials said yesterday.
The accident involved a van and SUV which crashed into each other about 1/10 of a mile north of Kalihiwai Road and Kuhio Highway, around milemarker 24, Mary Daubert, county spokeswoman, said.
There weren’t any passengers in either car, she added.
It took emergency responders roughly 30 minutes to extract the driver of the SUV from inside his vehicle using the Jaws of Life, Daubert added.
As a result, medics, police and firefighters had to close the road from 11:41 p.m. to 1:10 p.m.
Initial reports indicated the driver of the van, from Hanalei, had crossed the center line and that the driver of the Honda Passport, of Kilauea, had tried to avoid hitting him but to no avail. His SUV ended up colliding with the guardrail, Daubert said. Scanner traffic indicated one of the vehicles had been on fire. Speed and alcohol may have been a factor, Daubert said.
