Shannon Link sang her way to the top slot in the 2007 Kauai Idol competition Saturday at the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair.
Idol hopefuls tried out at Kukui Grove Center on July 14. The performances of those selected to move to the second round were placed on Kauaiworld.com, where the audience could review them and either vote online for their favorite or submit the ballot in The Garden Island. Each week, those receiving the fewest number of votes were eliminated.
After phase one and two, 20 contenders selected to continue on to phase three were ranked based on total votes received in round two, accounting for 25 percent. In the semifinals, audience participation (applause) counted for 30 percent and judges’ scores accounted for 45 percent of the vote.
Ten finalists made the cut after the semifinals were held Thursday: Elizabeth Yaris, Valarie Faford, Shannon Link, Donovan Pegeder, Jason Texeira, Joe Mauka, Ed Ripley, Louise Kane, Liza Lagazo and Josslyn Sarver.
In the finals, staged Saturday before an overflow crowd at the fair, judge’s score accounted for 60 percent and audience participation for 40 percent.
