Mahelona celebrates 90 years
Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital in Kapa‘a celebrated 90 years of service to Kaua‘i on Aug. 16.
Patient residents, families, staff and dignitaries joined together for a lu‘au celebration, capping off 90 days of smaller events and history contests.
State Rep. Hermina Morita gave the keynote address at the celebration, presenting the history of care for Kaua‘i.
More than 24 individuals and businesses contributed food, flowers, entertainment, gifts and services.
The hospital opened in 1917 as a tuberculosis center for Kaua‘i patients in memorial of Samuel Mahelona, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wilcox.
Today, it sees more than 300 patients each month. And in 2005, it was designated a critical access hospital.
HTA to announce ‘Keep It Hawai‘i’ awards
The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority will announce the recipients of the 16th annual “Keep It Hawai‘i” awards on Tuesday during its tourism conference on O‘ahu.
Keep It Hawai‘i is a series of awards that recognize individuals, organizations and businesses that are perpetuating the Hawaiian culture through programs, events or activities for visitors and residents alike.
All award nominees have been invited to attend the conference and attend the awards ceremony at 3:35 p.m.
HTA’s Hawaiian Cultural Program Advisory Council reviewed the nominations and selected the awardees. This committee is comprised of members of the Hawaiian community and visitor industry, with at least one representative from each county.
The Keep It Hawai‘i awards is one of several efforts under HTA’s Hawaiian Culture program, which supports the Hawaiian Culture initiative to honor and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture and community. Awardees are encouraged to serve as role models for the community and visitor industry.
Museum explores genealogy at ‘Ohana Day
Kaua‘i Museum’s ‘Ohana Day from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. on Saturday will explore genealogy in a workshop presented by Malie Foundation and Na Kahu O Ka Mo‘omheu (Keepers of Our Hawaiian Culture) with Nathan Kalama.
This marks the fourth workshop on this theme as part of the organization’s Year of the ‘Ohana.
Participants from the first three workshops will be greeted, as they chant their genealogies before entering the museum. Others are encouraged to write and then chant their own genealogies in English, as they enter the Kaua‘i Museum.
Punana Leo O Kaua‘i will sing in the courtyard, followed by music and a discussion on how drugs are affecting our island families.
Hawaiian delicacies such as kalo, kulolo, uala and mamaki tea will be served.

Poipu Bay Golf Course named among top courses
The Poipu Bay Golf Course at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa was recently recognized by Condé Nast Traveler readers as one of the Best Resort Golf Courses in the World.
Golfweek Magazine also named the course one of the top resort courses in the United States
The Condé Nast questionnaire included 4,300 responses by readers. They were asked to judge course on seven criteria: course design, speed of play, pro staff, accommodations, service, food/dining and facilities, according to a Hyatt statement.
The Poipu Bay Golf Course received an overall score of 88.8, ranking it 21st in the world.
Poipu Bay is an 18-hole championship course, situated on 210 oceanfront acres on Kauai’s south shore. It has won numerous awards and played host to the annual PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 1994 to 2006.
Keoki’s Paradise honors outstanding employees
Keoki’s Paradise awarded three employees this quarter for their commitment to go above and beyond their normal work duties.
Recipients include Prep-Cook Rudy Cayaban, Hostess Ashley Gaither and Hostess Kisha Palacio.
Each received a Keoki’s Paradise dinner-for-four gift certificate.
In addition, Keoki’s Paradise honors its employees that exemplify the restaurant’s four passions: bug for cleanliness, enthusiasm for the customer, pride in our employees and passion for quality. Those recipients include Katz Harvis, Krystal Muchich, Devin Ortal and Camille Jordan. Each received a Keoki’s Paradise dinner for two worth $100.
