Happy birthday to Hiroyuki Tanaka, director of the Tachibana High School Brass & Marching Band!
Art Umezu arranged for all kinds of goodies for the visiting band director who even got married on Kaua‘i. First off, he had Dean Nakayama create a special orange birthday cake, students from Kapa‘a, Waimea and Kaua‘i high schools sang a special tribute to him, and the crowning touch was a “TT” cap that Art said stands for “Tachibana/Tanaka,” as opposed to “Tropic Thunder.”
There were so many people … actually, some came to check out Ron Wiley who was doing the Verizon first anniversary gig with Sue Oshita and members of the Kaua‘i Police Department, but was able to digress enough to air some of the marching performance. Kaua‘i band director Darryl Miyasato was trying to video, but there were so many people, it was almost impossible. Vianne Tabata (no host family this trip) was enjoying the shade outside Genki Sushi, and coach Michael Tresler got his lunch and beat out the crowd. But Jonelle Kaohelaulii was waiting outside the Wyland display along with Wade Lord. Larry Rivera was able to hear the Tachibana band (but not the conversation) before adjourning to perform at the Wyland dedication. Congratulations to Jonathan Chun (he was going through the display), Mona Clark, and all those who made this work.
Joni Texeira (remember her from Kaua‘i High School?) is now a producer for NBC in Las Vegas, but came home after just having her baby … congratulations! Does this mean there is an NBC morning special in the offing?
