KALAHEO — Kamie Imai stuttered through the first period, but once ignited, went on to notch 15 points to lead the Piopio Bears under Dennis Onishi to a 32-28 showing over the Kaulupono Girls “A,” Friday night.
Playing at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, the Piopio Bears featured two girls who used to live on Kaua‘i, but are now residents in Hilo.
Layna Christian, who went on to lead the Bears’ second game with nine points, also made the Waiakea High School varsity program, her dad said.
“Her sister Krystal is on the JV program, there,” he said.
Topping the Kaulupono scoring in Game 1, Aiko Grande and Jayme Jacinto combined for 18 points, each player netting 9 points.
In Game 2, Kaulupono Girls “B” was led by Cheyanne Duarte and Kelsey Cadiente who each netted 6 points.
“A lot of people called when they heard the Bears were coming,” Karen Matsumoto, the coordinator for the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association, said. “They remember the Bears from their previous trips.”
Matsumoto said this year, in addition to the two girls who used to live on Kaua‘i, there were six girls who had come previously.
