According to www.everdayhealth.com, there are about 41 million individuals nationwide who are pre-diabetes or at risk for developing the disease.
To learn more about the disease, treatment, prevention and care for patients, attendees will have a one-stop opportunity from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, when the Kaua‘i Diabetes Today group, in conjunction with numerous agencies and community organizations, hosts its Summer Bash at Lydgate Park.
Starting with glucose screenings by Department of Health and Ho‘ola Lahui professionals, the event will offer information and exhibits.
The event will include glucose level readings, exercise sessions with physical and occupational therapists, and presentations at 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
Dr. Kalani Brady of the Straub Hospital and Clinic and associate professor and vice chair of the Department of Native Hawaiian Health at the University of Hawai‘i is the featured speaker.
Other presenters include Tyler Chihara, a podiatrist at the Bone and Joint Center at the Kaua‘i Medical Clinic; Don Traller, physician assistant and certified diabetes educator at the Health Management Program at the Kaua‘i Medical Clinic; Pat Tschida, coordinator of the Public Health Administration’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program at UH; and Dawn Pondish, dietitian at Wilcox Hospital.
Sponsors include Kaua‘i Diabetes Today, Kaua‘i Diabetes Coalition, Ho‘ola Lahui Hawai‘i, the Department of Health, the Lions Clubs of Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i Medical Services Association Care Connection and the Wilcox Health System.
The event is free to the public. A light lunch will be served.
