PUHI — Was the crowd smaller on Saturday at the Kaua‘i Community College?
Although registration for the fall semester has been taking place since April 16, KCC opened the doors to its registration resources Saturday.
“The last week before classes is always busy,” said Earl Nishiguchi, the KCC dean of Student Services. “We used to open the Saturday before classes start. This time, we thought we’d get a head start and open a week earlier.”
Students took advantage of that opening as Maj. Victor Aguilar from the Westside had his son in tow, trying to finalize the registration process for the college’s Jump Start program.
“My daughters all went through the program, so I thought my son could do it, too,” Aguilar said. “But it was a little rough going, there.”
Caught up in the paperwork, Aguilar was sent from window to window, person to person before a call home to his wife straightened everything out.
Bill Troutman of Kilauea had his daughter Caroline trying to finalize her registration before classes start Aug. 20.
Caroline, who just graduated Kapa‘a High School in June, had to go through the paperwork, get her TB test and take the placement exam.
“It’s going to take about three hours,” she told her dad. “Why don’t you go do something else and I’ll call you when I’m done.”
Nishiguchi said students come to the Student Services office, register, get their paperwork completed before going to the Business Office where tuition and other payments were being collected.
“The placement exams are being held at the Learning Resource Center,” he said.
Throughout this process, work was being done on the new One Stop Shop that will hopefully replace all the different stops at different locations around the campus, Nishiguchi said.
About the only thing students could not do was purchase their books.
“We couldn’t make that connection this time,” Nishiguchi said. “But the bookstore will probably be open next week.”
Although not completed for this semester, workers were busy installing the roof for the One Stop Shop as students went through the different phases of registration.
“They’re trying to finish the roof so when Flossie, the tropical storm, passes, at least it’ll be covered from the rain,” one student said.
Nishiguchi estimates about the same number of students for the fall semester as they had for the spring semester.
“But it’s still early. The number should be about the same as spring, but we’ll wait until the first day of class,” Nishiguchi said.
Registration continues throughout the week.
