The Mokihana Aquatics Club hosts its 3rd annual Kahu Kai Fastest Swimmer Competition and Fun Meet starting at 9:30 a.m., Aug. 18, and 9 a.m., Aug. 19, at the Kaua‘i High School swimming pool.
At least 110 swimmers from six different teams have already registered for the meet, whose deadline past earlier this week. However, Kaua‘i swimmers may register for the fastest man up until the morning of the event.
Last year’s defending champion Kelsey Tanaka returns to defend his title. Challenging him will be Eugene Achetta who placed third last year and second the year before.
The fastest swimmer on Kaua‘i competition is open to Kaua‘i male and female swimmers of all ages welcomed to swim 50 yards of freestyle. A prize of $500 goes to the top three swimmers.
Last year, the event attracted six of Kaua‘i’s fastest swimmers.
That Saturday, Olympic finalist Chris Woo will be hosting a free breaststroke clinic starting at approximately 1:30 p.m. and is open to all ages and abilities. Woo competed in the 1976 Olympics and helped the U.S. relay team to win the individual medley.
He swam competitively for 16 years and is one of the state’s leading experts on breaststroke and competitive swimming.
The Fun Meet is a fundraiser for Mokihana Aquatics which holds events no longer than 200 yards.
