Tom Potter posted a time of 39:56 to win the men’s division in last week’s 4th Annual Hanalei Sandman Biathlon at the Hanalei Pier.
Fourteen athletes swam the clear and glassy conditions of the bay to compete in the swim-run event that consisted of approximately a one-mile bay swim followed by a two to two-and-a-half mile beach run.
Coming in second with a time of 44:39 was Todd Beatty, followed by Kevin Gallagher visiting from Santa Cruz with a third place finish of 46:12.
In the women’s division, newcomer Suzanne Messinger took first place with a time of 40:52, followed by Kathleen Littlefield in 45:01 and Carrie Johnson placing third with a time of 48:50.
Potter also placed the fastest swim split of 22:58, while Suzanne Messinger had the fastest run split of 15:13.
Last year, the race was dedicated to Suzi “Date Bar” Williams, who had just suffered severe head trauma on the Na Pali coast.
This year, Williams was in attendance as a race volunteer.
Her presence, along with all of the volunteers and the athletes, and the companies that donated their time or a gift made the community event a success.
