The Kaua‘i Liquor Control Commission will hold a public hearing today on alleged violations of state drinking laws at June’s “Taste of Hawai‘i” event in Wailua.
At its 4 p.m. hearing in Room 3 at the Lihu‘e Civic Center, the commission will look at whether the sponsor, the Kapa‘a Rotary Club, committed violations.
Liquor Control Department Director Eric Honma said yesterday he couldn’t discuss the allegations because of an ongoing investigation.
“Every licensee has the opportunity to give its side of the facts, and based on that, the commission will determine whether a violation occurred or didn’t occur,” Honma said. “The details of the event will come out during the public hearing.”
One law prohibits any licensee or his employee to serve and furnish liquor to anyone under the influence of alcohol. The other law prohibits a sponsor from knowingly allowing a drunk or disorderly person on the premises of the event.
Taste of Hawai‘i Chairwoman Paula O’ Very-Saylor was not available for comment yesterday.
During the event, officers responded to an assault, resulting in the arrest of two individuals.
In other matters, the Liquor Control Commission will consider on Thursday a request from Sodexho America to allow liquor to be served when the Hawaii Superferry vessel, Alakai, is in port at Nawiliwili Harbor or when it sets sale from Kaua‘i to Honolulu, Honma said.
“Sodexho will be asking the same thing of Maui County and the city and county of Honolulu,” he said.
