The hot Maui sun took its toll on the Blazing Angels recently.
Playing with three guest players from the Kaua‘i Kickers, the Kaua‘i Soccer Club’s Blazing Angels GU 10 team faltered in the championship game of the 21st annual Hawai‘i Cup Invitational Soccer Tournament on Maui.
Entering the contest, the Blazing Angels had one tie and two wins before facing Pomaikai in the finals of their age group.
The loss earned the Blazing Angels the runner-up trophy, and under the direction of coaches Richard and Lynn Minei, the Angels demonstrated the Kaua‘i aloha spirit to earn the tournament’s sportsmanship recognition.
According to Tracy Bauman, the Angels’ first game was against Pomaikai, and on that meeting, the Angels tied the Maui team 2-2 in the opening round of the tournament.
Rebounding from the hard-fought stalemate, the Angels turned on and allowed no scores on them, beating Maui‘s Excel Soccer Club, 8-0 before shutting down Kula Thunder, 4-0 to earn a playoff spot.
Against Maui Tropix, the Angels prevailed 9-4 to earn the championship berth against Pomaikai.
Goalie Kulia Blalock is joined by Eryka Keoho, Cassie Wilson, Alanna Bauman, Joni Hashizume, Jordan Taboniar and Kekai Gonsalves for the Angels’ roster.
They were joined by Taylor Kaneakua, Courtney Bunao and Drew Vera Cruz for the Maui tournament.
