Wailua came through when it counted, knocking out Southwest Boyz “A,” 55-40 for one of the championship berths in the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association 18 and Under boys playoffs Saturday.
Another top seed, Kalepa Hillsiders, suffered its second straight loss, 42-36, at the hands of the Southwest Boyz “B” team.
That leaves the Hillsiders, undefeated until the final game in the season, to face Southwest “A” for third place when tip off takes place Tuesday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Curran Doctolero and David Mendes, provided the one-two combination for the Wailua greenshirts as each player finished with 20 points to lead the victory.
Clareson Torres was hot, but fell short for the “A” team, Torres finishing with 18 points in the effort.
Kasey Okihara exploded from his single-digit scoring Thursday night to lead the Southwest Boyz “B” with 15 points in its win over Kalepa. Following Okihara, quick-moving guard Braxton Garma added 10 points.
Travis Stine continued to lead the Hillsiders’ effort, this time finishing with 14 points followed by John Beralas contributing a dozen marks.
In the KYBA 18 Under girls contests, Destiny Smith finished with 14 points to lead Wailua to a 27-20 showing over the Lihu‘e Kamikaze led by Rachel Taira’s 7 points.
Claire Owens finished with 9 points to lead the Kilauea Hui to a 26-10 edge over Kaulupono Girls in the second girls’ contest of the day.
Mollie Connelly and Kathleen Cadiente paced the Kaulupono effort with 4 and 3 points, respectively.
KYBA girls will continue action tonight starting at 7 p.m. The KYBA 18U boys championship will take place tomorrow night starting at 7 p.m.
Both games will be at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
