Peter Cameron’s kill of a Ron Bonaguidi penalty shot ignited the crowd who welcomed the new sponsor, Menu Magazine, to the Kaua‘i Polo Club circuit, Sunday, at the ‘Anini Polo fields.
Cameron’s feat in the final chukker was the icing for Menu Magazine’s 5-4 come-from-behind win over Na Pali Properties.
Earlier, visiting player Lee Mullins squeezed through the melee to draw first blood for NPP, said Bobbie Love in her weekly report from ‘Anini.
This was followed by a 30-yard shot from Krista Bonaguidi who capitalized on a No. 2 penalty call for the early 2-0 NPP margin.
But MM answered the call as Scott Sims took a pass from Doug Blumenthal to bring MM to a 2-1 chase at the end of the opening chukker.
MM opened the second chukker with Ron Bonaguidi tying the match, 2-2.
Ronnie Tongg, riding behind Cameron’s clearing efforts, upped the ante 3-2 for MM. Tongg returned the favor later in the chukker by dropping the ball ahead of Cameron in midfield.
Cameron, with Blumenthal on his tail, controlled the orb and sent it through the pylons for the 4-2 MM lead at the half.
Following a defense-oriented third chukker highlighted by both teams sending chatter across the field to direct its respective players, Cameron netted MM’s final score off one of two No. 4 penalties assessed against NPP in the final chukker.
Blumenthal answered for NPP for the 5-3 reading, and a possibility of a tie.
However, both teams reined in, and in heavy goal-line traffic, Krista slipped through the middle to tap in the final goal of the day.
That NPP goal came up just short of the hoped-for stalemate as the scoreboard settled at 5-4.
Games continue Sunday at the ‘Anini Polo fields with the gates opening at 1:30 p.m. and the game starting at 3 p.m.
