MANA — Garden Isle Racing Association geared up for two evenings of drag racing at the Kauai Raceway Park earlier this month. Racers in various classes, Quick 8, Pro ET, Muscle V8, Sport Compact, Street, and Motorcycle competed for cash and prizes, along with the Junior Dragsters who scooped up trophies and gained bragging rights.
In the National Hot Rod Association Junior Dragster Challenge, kids — both boys and girls, ages 8 to 17 year olds — went head-to-head in competition. Proving who rules the track in this class was Sheldon Costa, taking home the winner trophy on both nights.
In the first evening, Costa left on a 0.599 light, going 71.2 mph with an elapsed time of 8.29 on a 8.20 dial-in, taking the win by only five feet over Alexis Vasconcelles, who left on a 0.756 light and broke out running a 8.68 ET on an 8.7 dial-in at 73.89 mph.
The following evening, Costa again nailed the light with a reaction time of 0.562, ran a 8.16 ET on a 8.10 dial-in at 79.37 mph, while Courtney Brock took home the runner-up trophy after leaving the starting line too early and red lighting.
Junior Dragsters are the half-scaled version of a top fuel dragster and can reach speeds of up to 85 mph. Instead of racing the quarter-mile length as other classes do, the Junior Dragsters only utilize 1/8 of a mile. The ET, the time it takes when the dragster or car leaves the starting line to the finish line, is determined by age.
The next Night Drag Race is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4.
