The Kaua‘i All Girls Rodeo Association will open the Eighth Annual Koloa Plantation Days Rodeo with a fast-paced Grand Entry on horseback.
The cowgirls have been practicing hard and plan to present an exciting kick-off to the rodeo day. The action begins at noon on Sunday, July 29, at the CJM Country Stables arena in Po‘ipu (about a mile past the Hyatt resort).
A new event called “Wild Cow Milking” has been added to the competition for the first time this year.
Generally considered the most hilarious of the rodeo events, wild cow milking involves four members of a team.
One rider ropes the cow, two muggers hold it still long enough to be milked into a longneck bottle. The designated runner sprints to the judges with the milk bottle, and the fastest team wins. Other competitions at the Plantation Days rodeo include team roping, double mugging and barrel racing.
The rodeo tops off the annual week-long Koloa Plantation Days Celebration.
Admission is $1 per person. There will be ample parking, open air bleacher seating with ocean views, food and beverage booths, logo and craft items on sale.

HWB’s Vanden Hurk baffles Cardinals
Fresh off earning the win for the World Team in the All-Star Futures Game last week, Rick Vanden Hurk turned in a brilliant performance for Florida as the Marlins blanked St. Louis 4-0 yesterday at Miami’s Dolphin Stadium.
Vanden Hurk — the first 2006 Hawaii Winter Baseball alumnus to reach the major leagues — earned the victory and improved his major league record to 3-2 in his seventh start of the season after striking out six Cardinals and scattering five hits through five innings. The rookie lowered his ERA to 7.15, and has now tallied 38 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched.
In his time with the Waikiki BeachBoys, Vanden Hurk led the HWB League with 63 strikeouts in 40 innings, and posted a 3.60 ERA.
