In remembrance of Lady Bird Johnson, Gov. Linda Lingle has ordered state flags at all state and county buildings to be flown at half-staff today, from sunup to sundown, the day of the former first lady’s interment.
Lingle’s action is in conjunction with President George W. Bush’s order to lower the U.S. flag on this day.
“Lady Bird Johnson’s grace and spirit as First Lady helped a mourning nation move forward during one of the most challenging periods in our country’s history,” Lingle said in a prepared statement.
“As we celebrate her life and the many contributions she made to our nation, I encourage Hawai‘i residents to carry on Lady Bird Johnson’s lifelong commitment to protecting the environment and preserving our islands’ natural resources.”
