Boasting some of the best dancers and food in one of the most pristine spots in the world, the Sheraton Kauai Resort continues to combine legacy with scenery in its Surf to Sunset Lu‘au — now three times a week.
The South Shore hotel celebrated the event’s second year, by adding a limited run of Wednesday evening lu‘au to its standard twice-weekly shows through Sept. 12.
Helping to kick off the first in a series of memorable nights at the debut Wednesday show June 27 were the legacy dancers of Aunty Kapu Kinimaka Alquiza, the cuisine of Todd Oldham and local personality Dickie Chang.
With onslaught of entertainment by Na Hula O Kahikukapolani and Tahitian dancers from Atooi Marama, the lu‘au pares well with its backdrop of lapping waves, palm tree silhouettes and rising moon. And there’s always the chance of a green flash or whale breach sighting.
While the dancers taught under Alquiza’s direction are among the top on the island — having gone as far as Japan in their tours — the oceanfront lu‘au is steps from the powdery, crescent-shaped beach.
A smorgasbord of kalua pig, lomi lomi, pipikaula, poke and poi, baked mahimahi lap cheoungand a grill station makes the event stand out. Guests can even try a fusion of modern Hawaiian influences in dishes such as steak with lemongrass chili pepper sesame shoyu.
Oldham, food and beverage director for the Sheraton, said he plans to add a mango passion cheesecake, fresh baked cookies and chocolate macadamia nut torte to the mix.
