NUKOLI‘I — Three Kapa‘a High School students joined seven local college students as recipients of the Contractors Association of Kaua‘i scholarships.
The 10 students were recognized Tuesday night by the association at its meeting, which featured special guest Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman speaking on mass transit.
Victor Rundbaken, Angel Hernandez and Bryson Reis, all 2007 Kapa‘a graduates, each received $1,000 with which they can embark on their college careers.
Funds for the scholarships are derived from the Payton Bryan-Chung Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Rundbaken, the son of Nancy Beckel and Allen Rundbaken, will be heading to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a mechanical engineering major.
A major in civil engineering or architecture is the goal for Reis, the son of Marilyn and Sidney Reis. He plans to attend the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Hernandez, the son of Marlina Diaz, of Kapa‘a, will attend Washington State University in Pullman with the intention of majoring in both civil engineering and mathematics.
Recipients of the $750 scholarships included:
• Sara Nonaka, a senior civil engineering major from Hanapepe, is the daughter of Christine and Russell Nonaka. She was recently accepted into the University of Colorado’s master’s program and is on track to complete her bachelor’s/master’s degrees in 2009.
• Cedric Macadangdang, the son of Pat Macadangdang, of Hanama‘ulu, is a junior electrical engineering major at the University of Southern California.
• Jason Orbe-Smith, the son of Lisa and Gary Heu, of Lihu‘e, will start his sophomore year as an architecture and environmental design student at the University of Colorado.
• Lynnell Wright, the daughter of U‘ilani and Erwin Wright, of Kekaha, will be a sophomore electrical engineering student at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Recipients of the $500 scholarships included:
• Garon Nobriga, the son of Rona and Nathan Nobriga of Puhi, will start the fall semester of his junior year at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. He is a civil and environmental engineering major.
• Weslyn Masumura, the son of Wesley and Diane Mitsuyasu-Masumura of Lihu‘e, will be a sophomore civil engineering major at the Oregon Institute of Technology.
• Michael Ishibashi is a senior civil engineering major at the University of Colorado. The Kalaheo native is the son of Janice and David Ishibashi.
