Kalepa Hillsiders remain undefeated after pulling ahead of Wailua in the second period Tuesday night at the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association games.
Kalepa controlled Wailua 47-32 in the opener of the double-header, and the Southwest Boyz B surged ahead of Southwest Boyz A, 54-47, in game two.
John Beralas nailed 7 points, including one from three-pointland, to lead Kalepa to a 14-6 second period.
“John was hot tonight so it made playing fun,” said teammate Travis Stine, following the matchup.
Beralas went on to net a game-high 22 points in the win that keeps Kalepa undefeated in the fledgling league. Included in the scoring, Beralas finished with a pair from outside the three-point arc and was 3-for-6 on the free throw line.
Following him, Alex La Madrid netted 8 points followed by Stein’s 5 points. Kaleo Cummings and Ian Lactaotao, both strong anchors on the right side, added 4 points each. Travis Kanete added 3 points and a pair from Kilika Dettloff, sent to the floor on a hammering Wailua defense in the first half, rounded out the win.
Curran Doctolero launched a pair of treys in the fourth period, but Wailua could not overcome the Kalepa firepower. That period ended with Kalepa on top 17-14, but Doctolero went on to net 16 points to lead the green shirt effort.
David Mendes, taking his turn in the paint, finished with 7 points. Cody Abigania added 4 points, Matt Lindsey finished with 3 points and a pair from Kevin Villanueva rounded out the effort.
Kasey Okihara finished with 15 points and James Sagucio added 13 points to lead the Southwest Boyz B to its 54-47 win over Southwest Boyz A in game two.
Tyrus Ceria-Lux, who burned the twine with double-digit scoring on opening night, was held to just 8 points in the Southwest Boyz A loss.
Clareson Torres led the Southwest Boyz A effort with 15 points followed by Kyle Achuela adding 9 points before Ceria-Lux’s 8.
Keelan Sakuda finished with 7 points for the SW A. Alden Lahip had 4 second-half points, Kalen Kakutani netted his pair in the final period and Brendan Cristobal marked his pair in the opening period to round out the effort.
Following the scoring leaders for SW B, Braxton Garma added 9 points, McDonald Alop finished with 5 points, and Sean Inouye marked 4 points.
Xavier Guirao added a three-point play in the final period, Mark Guirao had his 3 points come in the third period, and a pair from Ikaika Rowan in the second quadrant rounded out the Southwest Boyz B win.
