KAPA‘A — Ron Wiley beeped his horn as he passed the group from the Kawaihau Majors All-Star team practicing at the Main Diamond.
The all-star baseball team was gearing up for the 2007 District 1 Major Tournament which opens with two games Friday at the Main Diamond located on the far end of the New Kapa‘a Ball Park.
Brian Aiwohi, president of the Kawaihau Community Little League, said there are six teams involved in the District 1 tournament, including host Kawaihau.
“They’re all from the Windward side (of O‘ahu), and they all have names starting with “K,” Aiwohi said. “They’ll be playing through Wednesday, July 11, with provisions for a Thursday game if needed.”
Teams in the District 1 field include Kailua, Kaneohe American, Kaneohe National, Kahaluu, Kainalu and host Kawaihau.
Kainalu and Kawaihau will draw opening day byes and will see action starting Saturday.
The tournament opens at 1 p.m. tomorrow when Kaneohe American takes on Kailua.
That will be followed by Kaneohe National going up against Kahaluu with the winner facing Kawaihau, at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The winner of the tomorrow’s game will face Kainalu at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Bob Kawamoto serves as the Tournament Director with Fred Hackbarth as his assistant. Norman Aweau is the Umpire Consultant and Richard Ota is the Umpire Coordinator.
Aiwohi, in addition to being the president of the hosting league, is the Safety Director for the tournament.
Team members of the Kawaihau Majors All-Star team include Daniel Reis, Bronson Aiwohi, Derek Yamane, Justyn Nagahisa, Kamron Cortez, Collin Pungan, Ryan Koerte, Markie Martinez, Turtle Kuhaulua, McKenna Estacio, Robert Soares, Cody Juarez, Zavier Cummings and Kyana Hirokane.
Abe Kuhaulua is the head coach with Ashkhon Kuhaulua, Mark Martinez and Brandon Hirokane as the coach staff.
Martinez noted that the Broncos are also hosting its Regional tournament in Hanapepe with two Kaua‘i teams participating. This tournament will be at the same time as the District 1 tournament.
“It’s a baseball weekend, for sure,” Martinez said.
